Look at the $2500 Tata Nano on the left and the Toyota Yaris down below, Both cars are very similar and sleek. The problem is that the Yaris costs over 10K and it gets only 34mpg in contrast to the Nano which gets 50mpg. The tiny Tata Nano is the dream of Ratan Tata of Tata motors who created a car for the people. It is small and spare. Ratan Tata aims to make the subcontinent of India a superpower in the automotive industry. The tiny nano is the future. |
The small underpowered engine of the Tata Nano is what makes it such a dream to drive. It is comparable in size to a large riding mower. The fuel consumption is a lot less than most cars in its class. Sadly the US automakers do not have a similar automobile in price to the nano. The Chevy Aveo is a lot more expensive. Neither do the Asians have a comparable car.

Many point to the econocar known as the Toyota Yaris. This small vehicle is much better than any american automobile in the subcompact sector. It is has been the best selling car in Europe for years. The small and sporty Yaris is easy on the gas and a lot less expensive than a Toyota Prius Hybrid car that sells for about $25,000 and gets 43mpg. This is why you see many students getting the Yaris. Still, if the could get an even more economy car like the nano, then I believe that sales of the Yaris would crash. The Yaris is seen as quality, but the real reason for its success is the low cost of purchase. Most people that buy a Yaris cannot afford a more expensive car. US automakers do have the Chevy Aveo, but it is almost the same price as the Yaris and seen as low quality. There is talk that China may now unleash a powerful new low cost car to compete with India. There are rumors of a new sub 4000 dollar car in the works. And so it is, we can soon see if China or India dominates the future. |
